2. Problem + narrow wedge

  • Simulated manipulation success does not survive deployment. Stanford HAI 2026 AI Index: 89.4% sim (RLBench) vs 12% on real household tasks — different evaluation contexts, not one controlled system degrading 89→12. Use as urgency signal, not a single-run story.
  • Labs self-report sim scores; synthetic worlds rarely get independent physics checks.
  • Institutional real-robot eval (RoboArena / Robocurve-class) exists at the top — small teams still lack a fast, private, sim-first pre-check.
